We are right in the thick of winter here in the Adirondacks and let me tell you what, it has been COLD! There have been many consecutive nights of negative temperatures — some nights as low as -20, with wind chills closer to -40!
While there are tons of great outdoor activities in the Adirondacks, after a few hours of playing in the snow you may just want to do something inside. Here are a few ideas to keep you toasty!
Grab a Fireside Cocktail
A fireplace is a great thing in the dead of winter. The only thing that could make it better is a nice cocktail. Head to Melody Lodge in Speculator, where you can grab a glass of wine or hot Irish coffee. Grab a seat in front of the cozy fireplace and enjoy! You can even reserve a table in the dining room — I'd suggest requesting a table in front of the fireplace in the dining room area.
Catch a Flick
Head to the Indian Lake Theater to enjoy a movie. It's great family fun, and a good way to shake the chill off! This quaint theater has one screen, and usually offers a few different movies throughout the week. Their offerings vary from current family movies to seasonal classics. They also have a concession stand that offers all of the classics — popcorn, candy, and soda. And you can't beat the price! Regular admission is only $7, and under 18 get in for $5 (special event pricing may vary).
Read a Book
One thing you may not think of when visiting another town is stopping into the local library. Most public libraries will let you hang out, read a book, and even surf the internet out of the cold, harsh weather. It's a great way to spend time with kids, or just have a little down time to yourself.
Shop Till You Drop
Our small towns here in the Adirondacks have quite a bit to offer in the way of shopping. Spend your day doing a little retail therapy to stay warm. You can head to Hoss's Country Corner in Long Lake to find some cozy sweatshirts and blankets, or to even find some home decor. The Speculator Department Store carries Columbia winter gear as well as Carharrt clothing. And the Inlet Department Store has a little bit of everything.
Temps Are Rising
Temperatures in the Adirondacks can be very unpredictable, but when things start to get a little warmer, don't forget about all of the fun outdoor activities we have. Downhill skiing, cross-country skiing, snowmobiling, snowshoeing... The fun is endless, so get out there and do something! And don't forget to check out the great events happening all winter long.
