Puffer Pond

Puffer Pond

Puffer Pond is a fine wilderness pond to fish. It's a bit of a hike to reach, but well worth the miles traveled.

Getting there

The Kings Flow trailhead is at the end of Big Brook Road. From the intersection of Route 28 and Route 30 follow Route 30 toward Speculator. Continue for 0.5 mile, turn left on Big Brook Road, and follow it for 8 miles to its end at the Chimney Mountain trailhead. Follow the signs for Chimney Mountain — Big Brook Road can be a bit confusing to first time visitors.

Pay the parking fee and hike the 2.1-mile trail to the shore of Puffer Pond.

Fishing

Access off the north side via a 2.1-miles hike along a marked foot trail for shoreline fishing. You can haul a canoe or kayak here, but it will be a long portage.

Fish Species: bullhead, brook trout

Insider Tips

  • There are two nice lean-tos on the north shore of the Puffer Pond for an extended time out.
  • Fishing is excellent from shore near the lean-tos.
  • The cooler waters on the northeast end near the inlet of the pond tends to be the prime location.

Always follow state fishing regulations and be sure to pick up a NYS Freshwater Fishing Guide at your local outfitters or regional DEC office.
